Sri Lanka Tourist Visas to Be Offered with No Fee for 35 Countries

GMS Flash Alert 2024-179 | September 12, 2024

Sri Lanka has approved free tourist visas for 35 countries to boost tourism. ÌýTourists will be given 30-day visas under a six-month pilot programme that will start from 1 October 2024.1

Why this matters

This new visa-free policy may be welcomed by foreign nationals who intend to apply for the Tourist Visa - Sri Lanka. ÌýWaiving visa fees could significantly enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal as a tourist destination (especially for tourists from the 35 countries in question).Ìý

It is important to note that the tourist visa does not permit the traveller to work in Sri Lanka.Ìý This, therefore, will have no effect on globally-mobile employees or their multinational employers.Ìý

Context

The country â€ like many countries â€ saw its tourism industry hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.Ìý But the tourism industry is reaping the benefits of a turnaround.Ìý India is the largest source of tourists with 246,922 arrivals, followed by United Kingdom with 123,992, latest data from the Sri Lanka Development Authority showed.2
