An important milestone on the road to digital invoicing was reached in January 2025: companies must be able to receive B2B e-invoices. According to the current status, the issuing of e-invoices will also gradually become mandatory from 2027.

How are German companies dealing with these changes, how well are they already prepared and what challenges are they facing? Our survey provides answers. An overview:

Digitalization with obstacles 鈥 and potential

For many, e-billing is a key to increasing efficiency and reducing costs. But it also poses challenges for many companies 鈥 from technological issues and regulatory uncertainties to the lack of standardization. Some small and medium-sized companies in particular still feel inadequately informed.

Who is responsible?

In most companies, responsibility for the introduction of e-billing lies with the accounting or finance department 鈥 with support from IT. Around 80 percent of survey participants had already taken measures for implementation by the end of 2024, but generally with the sole focus on readiness to receive.

Outside support needed

Many companies rely on external service providers for implementation 鈥 whether national, European or global. Nevertheless, despite international business activities, around half of our survey participants are initially concentrating exclusively on implementation in Germany.
