Registration of Motor Vehicles: January-April 2025
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-April 2025.
In April 2025, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 3.877, recording a decrease of 18,6% compared to 4.762 in April 2024. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 20,2% to 2.924, from 3.662 in April 2024.
The main developments during the period January-April 2025 compared to the corresponding period of 2024 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 8,3% to 16.133 in January-April 2025, from 17.589 in January-April 2024.
(b) Passenger saloon cars decreased to 12.509 from 13.851 in January-April 2024, recording a fall of 9,7%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 5.545 or 44,3% were new and 6.964 or 55,7% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a rise of 10,9% to 1.551.
(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-April 2025 to 42,9% (from 48,9% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 9,0% in 2025 from 10,0% in 2024. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 3,6% in 2024 to 4,8% in 2025 and of hybrid cars from 37,4% to 43,3%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-April 2025 decreased to 44, from 78 in the same period of 2024.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 2,1% to 1.921 in January-April 2025, compared to 1.963 in January-April 2024. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 1,3% to 1.570 and road tractors (units of trailers) by 2,8% to 73, while heavy goods vehicles decreased by 7,8% to 213 and rental vehicles by 41,4% to 65.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-April 2025 decreased to 80 compared to 364 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 24,7% to 1.371 in January-April 2025, compared to 1.099 in the same period of 2024.

Total imports of goods in January鈥揗arch 2025 amounted to 鈧�3.190,5 mn as compared to 鈧�2.558,8 mn in January鈥揗arch 2024, recording an increase of 24,7%. Total exports of goods in January-March 2025 were 鈧�1.344,1 mn compared to 鈧�849,1 mn in January-March 2024, registering an increase of 58,3%. The trade deficit was 鈧�1.846,4 mn in January鈥揗arch 2025 compared to 鈧�1.709,7 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

Total imports of goods amounted to 鈧�1.035,4 mn in February 2025 as compared to 鈧�863,7 mn in February 2024, recording an increase of 19,9%.
Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were 鈧�321,6 mn in February 2025 as compared to 鈧�120,5 mn in February 2024, recording an increase of 166,9%.
Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were 鈧�311,1 mn in February 2025 compared to 鈧�111,5 mn in February 2024. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were 鈧�9,5 mn in February 2025 compared to 鈧�7,9 mn in February 2024.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were 鈧�173,0 mn in February 2025 as compared to 鈧�153,6 mn in February 2024, recording an increase of 12,6%.

Government employment by category: April 2025
In April 2025 total government employment increased by 237 persons (0,4%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2024 and reached 55.490 persons. Employment in the Civil Service and in the Security Forces decreased by 1,2% and 1,1% respectively, whereas it increased in the Educational Service by 3,8%. For the period January 鈥� April 2025 the average total government employment increased by 0,9% compared to the corresponding period of 2024.
In April 2025 in the Civil Service there were 11.960 permanent employees, 4.141 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.458 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.798 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,2%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (6,2%).
In the Educational Service there were 12.461 permanent employees, 947 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.824 employees with contracts of definite duration and 141 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (67,8%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,8%).
In Security Forces there were 8.430 permanent employees, 4.304 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 267 employees with contracts of definite duration and 759 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (61,3%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (1,9%).

Road freight transport: 4th quarter 2024
The Statistical Service announces the release of the latest figures for road freight transport for the fourth quarter of 2024.
During the period October-December 2024, the total weight of goods transported by road in Cyprus decreased by 9,7% compared to the corresponding period of 2023, while the weight of freight transported from and to Cyprus increased by 3,4%.
During the period January-December 2024, the total weight of goods transported by road in Cyprus increased by 3,2% compared to the corresponding period of 2023, while the weight of freight transported from and to Cyprus also increased by 2,0%.

The GDP growth rate in real terms during the first quarter of 2025 is positive and it is estimated at 3,0% over the corresponding quarter of 2024. Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at 3,0%.
The positive GDP growth rate is mainly attributed to the sectors: "Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles", "Information and Communication", "Construction" and "Hotels and Restaurants".
