Registration of motor vehicles: January-February 2025
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-February 2025.
In February 2025, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 3.757, recording a decrease of 13,6% compared to 4.346 in February 2024. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 15,5% to 2.908, from 3.443 in February 2024.
The main developments during the period January-February 2025 compared to the corresponding period of 2024 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 8,8% to 7.834 in January-February 2025, from 8.589 in January-February 2024.
(b) Passenger saloon cars decreased to 6.084 from 6.873 in January-February 2024, recording a fall of 11,5%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 2.849 or 46,8% were new and 3.235 or 53,2% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a rise of 9,7% to 555.
(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-February 2025 to 41,6% (from 50,3% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 9,2% in 2025 from 10,4% in 2024. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 3,1% in 2024 to 5,3% in 2025 and of hybrid cars from 36,3% to 43,9%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-February 2025 decreased to 20, from 59 in the same period of 2024.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 5,3% to 915 in January-February 2025, compared to 966 in January-February 2024. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 1,0% to 773, while heavy goods vehicles decreased by 12,7% to 89, road tractors (units of trailers) by 15,2% to 28 and rental vehicles by 62,1% to 25.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-February 2025 decreased to 49 compared to 92 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 36,6% to 661 in January-February 2025, compared to 484 in the same period of 2024.

Persons
Total Employment for the 4th quarter of 2024 is estimated at 500.606 persons, of which 448.007 are employees and 52.599 are self-employed.
Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023, total employment increased by 1,7% for the 4th quarter of 2024. The most significant percentage increases were observed in the economic activities of Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (NACE R), Accommodation and Food Service Activities (NACE I) and Information and communication (NACE J).
Hours Worked
Actual hours worked for the 4th quarter of 2024 are estimated at 233.566 thousand; an increase of 1,7% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023. The most significant percentage increases were observed in the economic activities of Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (NACE R), Accommodation and Food Service Activities (NACE I) and Information and communication (NACE J). The Construction activities (NACE F) recorded a decrease in hours worked.

Government employment by category: February 2025
In February 2025 total government employment increased by 599 persons (1,1%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2024 and reached 55.296 persons. Employment in the Civil Service and in the Educational Service increased by 0,2% and 3,8% respectively, whereas employment in the Security Forces decreased by 0,8%. For the period January 鈥� February 2025 the average total government employment increased by 1,0% compared to the corresponding period of 2024.
In February 2025 in the Civil Service there were 11.991 permanent employees, 4.162 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.381 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.663 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,7%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (6,0%).
In the Educational Service there were 12.461 permanent employees, 946 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.689 employees with contracts of definite duration and 155 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (68,3%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,8%).
In Security Forces there were 8.470 permanent employees, 4.362 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 268 employees with contracts of definite duration and 748 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (61,2%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (1,9%).

Fiscal Accounts of General Government: January 2025
The preliminary General Government fiscal results, which are prepared by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) indicate a surplus of 鈧�566,9 mn (1,6% of GDP) for January 2025, as compared to a surplus of 鈧�476,5 mn (1,4% of GDP) that was recorded during January 2024.
Revenue
During January 2025, total revenue increased by 鈧�194,3 mn (+14,3%) and amounted to 鈧�1.554,9 mn, compared to 鈧�1.360,6 mn in the corresponding month of 2024.
In detail, taxes on production and imports increased by 鈧�40,2 mn (+11,3%) and amounted to 鈧�396,3 mn, compared to 鈧�356,1 mn in 2024, of which net VAT revenue increased by 鈧�8,4 mn (+3,5%) and amounted to 鈧�249,7 mn, compared to 鈧�241,3 mn in 2024. Revenue from taxes on income and wealth increased by 鈧�52,2 mn (+9,7%) and amounted to 鈧�592,7 mn, compared to 鈧�540,5 mn in 2024. Property income increased by 鈧�2,8 mn (+37,4%) and amounted to 鈧�10,3 mn, compared to 鈧�7,5 mn in 2024. Revenue from the sale of goods and services increased by 56,6 mn and amounted to 鈧�109,3 mn, compared to 鈧�52,7 mn in 2024. Social contributions increased by 鈧�29,9 mn (+7,8%) and amounted to 鈧�415,1 mn, compared to 鈧�385,2 mn in 2024. Current transfers increased by 鈧�14,5 mn (+97,5%) and amounted to 鈧�29,3 mn, compared to 鈧�14,8 mn in 2024.
On the contrary, capital transfers decreased by 鈧�1,8 mn (-50,4%) to 鈧�1,8 mn, from 鈧�3,6 mn in 2024.
Expenditure
During January 2025, total expenditure increased by 鈧�103,9 mn (+11,8%) and amounted to 鈧�988,0 mn, compared to 鈧�884,1 mn in the corresponding month of 2024.
In detail, intermediate consumption increased by 鈧�0,5 mn (+0,7%) and amounted to 鈧�77,6 mn, compared to 鈧�77,1 mn in 2024. Compensation of employees (including imputed social contributions and pensions of civil servants) increased by 鈧�28,4 mn (+9,9%) and amounted to 鈧�314,3 mn, compared to 鈧�285,9 mn in 2024. Social benefits increased by 鈧�49,6 mn (+12,5%) and amounted to 鈧�445,7 mn, compared to 鈧�396,1 mn in 2024. Interest payable increased by 鈧�0,6 mn (+1,7%) and amounted to 鈧�35,5 mn, compared to 鈧�34,9 mn in 2024. Subsidies increased by 鈧�4,4 mn and amounted to 鈧�8,7 mn, compared to 鈧�4,3 mn in 2024. Current transfers increased by 鈧�13,1 mn (+21,3%) and amounted to 鈧�74,6 mn, compared to 鈧�61,5 mn in 2024.
The capital account increased by 鈧�7,3 mn (+29,8%) and amounted to 鈧�31,6 mn, compared to 鈧�24,3 mn in 2024, of which gross capital formation increased by 鈧�2,7 mn (+10,4%) and amounted to 鈧�28,1 mn, compared to 鈧�25,4 mn in 2024.

Building permits: October 2024
The Statistical Service announces that the number of building permits authorized during October 2024 stood at 470 compared to 632 in October 2023, registering a decrease of 25,6%. The total value of these permits reached 鈧�177,8 million and the total area 147,0 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 790 dwelling units. During the period January 鈥� October 2024, 5.955 building permits were issued compared to 5.906 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 0,8%. The total value of these permits increased by 4,3% and the total area by 6,4%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 6,5%.
As from the 1st July 2024, the authority of issuing building permits was transferred from the municipalities and the district administration offices to the newly founded Local Government Organisations (LGOs) and the licensing process is performed through the new integrated information system 鈥淚ppodamos鈥�.

Total imports of goods in January 2025 were 鈧�1.117,8 mn as compared to 鈧�867,0 mn in January 2024, recording an increase of 28,9%. Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�561,4 mn and from third countries 鈧�556,4 mn, compared to 鈧�522,1 mn and 鈧�344,9 mn respectively in January 2024. Imports in January 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�70,8 mn as compared to 鈧�65,6 mn in January 2024.
Total exports of goods in January 2025 were 鈧�435,1 mn as compared to 鈧�311,8 mn in January 2024, recording an increase of 39,5%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�79,4 mn and to third countries 鈧�355,7 mn, compared to 鈧�133,2 mn and 鈧�178,6 mn respectively in January 2024. Exports in January 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�11,3 mn as compared to 鈧�62,3 mn in January 2024.
The trade deficit was 鈧�682,7 mn in January 2025 compared to 鈧�555,2 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

Total imports of goods amounted to 鈧�1.341,4 mn in December 2024 as compared to 鈧�954,1 mn in December 2023, recording an increase of 40,6%.
Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in December 2024 were 鈧�248,0 mn as compared to 鈧�218,1 mn in December 2023, recording an increase of 13,7%.
Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions, in December 2024 were 鈧�237,4 mn compared to 鈧�209,4 mn in December 2023. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions, in December 2024 were 鈧�9,0 mn compared to 鈧�7,8 mn in December 2023.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in December 2024 were 鈧�119,9 mn as compared to 鈧�174,3 mn in December 2023, recording a decrease of 31,2%.
