Tourist arrivals and returns of residents of Cyprus from trips abroad: December 2024
Tourist arrivals
The arrivals of tourists reached 133.063 in December 2024 compared to 123.630 in December 2023, recording an increase of 7,6%.
For the period of January 鈥� December 2024, arrivals of tourists totaled 4.040.200 compared to 3.845.652 in the corresponding period of 2023, recording an increase of 5,1%.
Arrivals from the United Kingdom were the main source of tourism for December 2024, with a share of 23,7% (31.501) of total arrivals, followed by Israel with 17,4% (23.168), Poland with 9,4% (12.473), Greece with 9,0% (11.969) and Germany with 5,7% (7.535).
For a percentage of 49,6% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in December 2024 was holidays, for 37,5% visit to friends and relatives and for 12,7% business. Respectively, in December 2023, 58,4% of tourists visited Cyprus for holidays, 30,4% visited friends or relatives and 11,0% visited Cyprus for business reasons.
Returns of residents of Cyprus
A total number of 168.022 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad in December 2024 compared to 153.736 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 9,3%.
The main countries from which residents of Cyprus returned in December 2024 were Greece with a share of 31,2% (52.344), the United Kingdom with 13,7% (22.995) and Poland with 5,3% (8.956).
The purpose of travel for the residents of Cyprus in December 2024 was mainly holidays, with a percentage of 65,7%, whilst business reasons held a percentage of 16,3%, studies 17,6% and other reasons 0,4%.

Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP): December 2024
The HICP rose by 3,1% between December 2023 and December 2024, and decreased by 0,3% in the month between November 2024 and December 2024. For the period January 鈥� December 2024, the HICP rose by 2,3% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Compared to December 2023, the categories Recreation and Culture (7,5%), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (7,3%) and Restaurants and Hotels (5,4%) showed the largest positive changes.
In comparison to November 2024, the largest changes were recorded in the categories Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (1,0%) and Transport (-1,7%).
For the period January 鈥� December 2024 compared to the same period last year, the largest change was observed in the category Restaurants and Hotels (5,5%).
The largest changes in economic categories compared to December 2023 were observed in the categories of Food-Alcoholic Beverages-Tobacco (5,9%) and Services (4,5%), while compared to the previous month, the largest change was observed in the category of Services (-0,9%).

The Price Index of Construction Materials for December 2024 reached 116,94 units (base year 2021=100), recording a decrease of 0,28% compared to the previous month.
Compared to the same month of the previous year, the index recorded a marginal increase of 0,04%. By main commodity category, increases were recorded in products of wood, insulation materials, chemicals and plastics (1,39%), electromechanical products (0,97%), mineral products (0,77%) and minerals (0,74%), whereas decreases were observed in metallic products (-2,33%).
For the period January-December 2024, the index recorded a decrease of 0,81% compared to the corresponding period of 2023.

Building permits: August 2024
The Statistical Service announces that the number of building permits authorized during August 2024 stood at 183 compared to 450 in August 2023. The total value of these permits reached 鈧�87,4 million and the total area 66,2 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 323 dwelling units.
During the period January 鈥� August 2024, 5.062 building permits were issued compared to 4.662 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 8,6%. The total value of these permits increased by 16,3% and the total area by 18,0%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 16,2%.
The noteworthy decrease in the number of building permits issued in August 2024 is to a large extent the result of the transfer as from the 1st July 2024 of the authority of issuing building permits from the municipalities and the district administration offices to the newly founded Local Government Organisations (LGOs) and the problems encountered in the operation of the new integrated information system 鈥淚ppodamos鈥�.
