Registration of Motor Vehicles: January-November 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-November 2024.
In November 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 3.850, recording a decrease of 3,7% compared to 3.997 in November 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 10,0% to 2.920, from 3.243 in November 2023.
The main developments during the period January-November 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 10,1% to 46.780 in January-November 2024, from 42.500 in January-November 2023.
(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 36.360 from 34.140 in January-November 2023, recording a rise of 6,5%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 14.380 or 39,5% were new and 21.980 or 60,5% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 29,7% to 3.789.
(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-November 2024 to 48,9% (from 58,2% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 10,1% in 2024 from 10,2% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,7% in 2023 to 4,0% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 28,9% to 36,9%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-November 2024 decreased to 127, from 306 in the same period of 2023.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 30,6% to 5.355 in January-November 2024, compared to 4.100 in January-November 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 33,7% to 4.277, heavy goods vehicles by 25,9% to 628, road tractors (units of trailers) by 54,2% to 222, while rental vehicles decreased by 12,0% to 228.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-November 2024 increased to 657 compared to 305 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 16,1% to 3.657 in January-November 2024, compared to 3.151 in the same period of 2023.

Total imports of goods in October 2024 were 鈧�1.209,9 mn as compared to 鈧�1.057,0 mn in October 2023, recording an increase of 14,5%. Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�615,7 mn and from third countries 鈧�594,1 mn, compared to 鈧�640,2 mn and 鈧�416,7 mn respectively in October 2023. Imports in October 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�63,3 mn as compared to 鈧�21,6 mn in October 2023.
Total exports of goods in October 2024 were 鈧�442,3 mn as compared to 鈧�281,8 mn in October 2023, recording an increase of 57,0%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�90,7 mn and to third countries 鈧�351,6 mn, compared to 鈧�93,8 mn and 鈧�187,9 mn respectively in October 2023. Exports in October 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�53,0 mn as compared to 鈧�4,8 mn in October 2023.

Government employment by category: November 2024
In November 2024 total government employment reached 55.243 persons. For the period January 鈥� November 2024 average total government employment reached 54.229 persons, marking an increase of 1.698 persons (3,2%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023. This increase is mainly attributed to the increase of the Educational Service casual staff, due to the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth as from the school year 2023-2024.
In November 2024 in the Civil Service there were 12.020 permanent employees, 4.190 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.288 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.831 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,5%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5,5%).
In the Educational Service there were 12.460 permanent employees, 963 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.545 employees with contracts of definite duration and 138 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (68,8%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,8%).
In Security Forces there were 8.315 permanent employees, 4.454 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 292 employees with contracts of definite duration and 747 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (60,2%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,1%).

Interest Rate Subsidy Scheme - Terms and Beneficiaries
On December 11, the Council of Ministers approved the terms of the Interest Rate Subsidy Scheme for Housing Loans, the application form, and the accompanying Completion Guide.
After the meeting, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis announced that the scheme's terms, application form, and guide would be published on the website of the Treasury Department. Applications can be submitted at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and District Citizen Service Centers (KEPO) from January 2, 2025, for a period of two months.
The scheme aims to provide financial support to households with housing loans, in the form of interest rate subsidies. This measure seeks to mitigate the negative effects of inflation and rising interest rates on disposable income.
Eligible individuals must meet the following conditions:
- Loan Agreement Dates: Have signed a loan agreement between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, and opened a corresponding loan account.
- Loan Type: Hold housing loans with a variable interest rate (regardless of the base rate type) that was not used to repay or restructure a previous loan. The scheme covers loans for purchasing or constructing a primary residence, including part of a loan used to buy the plot of land.
- Loan Amount: The total loan amount submitted for subsidy must not exceed 鈧�400,000.
- Annual Family Income: Annual household income must not exceed 鈧�50,000.
- Tax Compliance: Applicants must have settled or arranged their tax obligations with the Tax Department up to and including the 2023 tax year.
Duration: The maximum subsidy period is two years.
Borrowers will receive a subsidy covering 50% of the difference between the average total interest rate during the reference period and the total interest rate applicable at the time of the loan account issuance. The maximum subsidy is 2 percentage points (200 basis points) for a period of two years from the date of the first loan disbursement.
The scheme has been deemed compliant with EU regulations as it does not involve state aid. Provisions for the scheme have been included in the Treasury Department鈥檚 budget for 2025 (鈧�12 million), 2026 (鈧�11 million), and 2027 (鈧�10 million).
This initiative is part of a broader set of government measures to support households against the effects of inflationary pressures and rising costs.

Monthly economic developments: January-October 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the bimonthly bulletin 芦Monthly Economic Developments禄 for the period January 鈥� October 2024. The bulletin includes the most important economic developments for the Cyprus Economy, for the latest months up to October 2024, as well as comparative data for the last four years, which were available until the 11th of December 2024.
Manufacturing Production during the period January-September 2024 recorded an increase of 3,3% compared to January-September 2023.
The total area of Building Permits Authorized reached 1.627,5 thousand square metres during the period January-June 2024, recording an increase of 46,5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The total Registrations of Motor Vehicles increased by 11,5%, reaching to 42.930 during the period January-October 2024. Private saloon cars increased to 29.588, recording a rise of 15,8% and light goods vehicles increased to 3.855 recording a rise of 34,2% compared to January-October 2023.
The Consumer Price Index increased by 1,8% during the period January-October 2024, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The total Imports of Goods reached 鈧�9.758,1 mn during the period January鈥揙ctober 2024, recording a decrease of 12,3% and total Exports of Goods reached 鈧�3.383,7 mn, recording also a decrease of 5,3%.
The Arrivals of Tourists totaled 3.727.196 during the period January-October 2024, compared to 3.562.417 in the corresponding period of 2023, recording an increase of 4,6%.
