Registration of motor vehicles: January - October 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-October 2024.
In October 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 4.111, recording a decrease of 2,7% compared to 4.223 in October 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 8,9% to 3.096, from 3.398 in October 2023.
The main developments during the period January-October 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 11,5% to 42.930 in January-October 2024, from 38.503 in January-October 2023.
(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 33.440 from 30.897 in January-October 2023, recording a rise of 8,2%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 13.308 or 39,8% were new and 20.132 or 60,2% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 29,5% to 3.637.
(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-October 2024 to 49,5% (from 58,9% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 10,0% in 2024 from 10,1% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,6% in 2023 to 3,8% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 28,3% to 36,7%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-October 2024 decreased to 125, from 279 in the same period of 2023.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 31,2% to 4.823 in January-October 2024, compared to 3.676 in January-October 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 34,2% to 3.855, heavy goods vehicles by 29,7% to 576, road tractors (units of trailers) by 57,9% to 199, while rental vehicles decreased by 17,5% to 193.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-October 2024 increased to 627 compared to 263 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 14,4% to 3.348 in January-October 2024, compared to 2.927 in the same period of 2023.

Average monthly earnings of employees: 2nd quarter 2024
Based on provisional data, the average gross monthly earnings of employees during the second quarter of 2024, amounted to 鈧�2.398 compared to 鈧�2.262 during the second quarter of 2023, i.e. an increase of 6,0% is observed.
The average gross monthly earnings during the second quarter of 2024, seasonally adjusted, are estimated at 鈧�2.475 and compared to the first quarter of 2024 they are increased by 1,6%.
The average gross monthly earnings of male employees during the second quarter of 2024 are estimated at 鈧�2.606 and of female employees at 鈧�2.141. Compared to the second quarter of 2023, the average gross monthly earnings of male and female employees recorded an increase of 6,4% and 5,6% respectively.

Government employment by category: October 2024
In October 2024 total government employment reached 54.884 persons. For the period January 鈥� October 2024 average total government employment reached 54.128 persons, marking an increase of 1.784 persons (3,4%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023. This increase is mainly attributed to the increase of the Educational Service casual staff, due to the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth as from the school year 2023-2024.
In October 2024 in the Civil Service there were 12.045 permanent employees, 4.199 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.219 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.883 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (70,1%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,8%).
In Security Forces there were 8.328 permanent employees, 4.479 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 294 employees with contracts of definite duration and 751 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (60,1%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,1%).

Total imports of goods in September 2024 were 鈧�944,2 mn as compared to 鈧�1.101,4 mn in September 2023, recording a decrease of 14,3%. Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�592,9 mn and from third countries 鈧�351,3 mn, compared to 鈧�638,5 mn and 鈧�462,9 mn respectively in September 2023.
Imports in September 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�28,9 mn as compared to 鈧�7,9 mn in September 2023. Total exports of goods in September 2024 were 鈧�350,2 mn as compared to 鈧�444,2 mn in September 2023, recording a decrease of 21,2%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�109,6 mn and to third countries 鈧�240,6 mn, compared to 鈧�86,2 mn and 鈧�358,0 mn respectively in September 2023.
Total imports of goods in January鈥揝eptember 2024 amounted to 鈧�8.539,7 mn as compared to 鈧�10.070,1 mn in January鈥揝eptember 2023, recording a decrease of 15,2%. Total exports of goods in January-September 2024 were 鈧�2.941,3 mn compared to 鈧�3.289,4 mn in January-September 2023, registering a decrease of 10,6%. The trade deficit was 鈧�5.598,4 mn in January鈥揝eptember 2024 compared to 鈧�6.780,7 mn in the corresponding period of 2023.

Total imports of goods amounted to 鈧�966,6 mn in August 2024 as compared to 鈧�1.243,1 mn in August 2023, recording a decrease of 22,2%.
Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in August 2024 were 鈧�192,7 mn as compared to 鈧�220,3 mn in August 2023, recording a decrease of 12,5%. Domestic exports of industrial products in August 2024 were 鈧�185,4 mn compared to 鈧�214,1 mn in August 2023, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in August 2024 were 鈧�6,5 mn compared to 鈧�5,5 mn in August 2023.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in August 2024 were 鈧�84,0 mn as compared to 鈧�202,5 mn in August 2023, recording a decrease of 58,5%.

The positive GDP growth rate is mainly attributed to the sectors: "Hotels and Restaurants", "Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles", "Information and Communication" and "Construction".
