Survey on the trips of residents 2023
Residents of Cyprus participating in domestic and outbound trips
During 2023, 484.365 residents of Cyprus participated in at least one domestic or/and outbound trip that included a minimum of one overnight stay for personal purposes, recording an increase of 8,4% compared to 2022, during which a total of 446.633 persons have travelled domestically or abroad.
Residents participating only in domestic trips decreased by 6,6% in 2023, reaching 150.751 compared to 161.489 in 2022.
The number of residents participating only in outbound trips amounted to 175.825, showing an increase of 11,1% compared to 158.294 residents who travelled abroad in 2022.
Additionally, 157.789 persons participated in both domestic and outbound trips in 2023, recording an increase of 24,4% compared to 2022.
Trips of Residents
The number of domestic trips decreased by 7,4%, from 1.689.154 trips recorded in 2022 to 1.564.359 in 2023. A percentage of 98,1% of domestic trips were taken for personal purposes (i.e. leisure, recreation and holidays, visiting relatives and friends, health reasons, pilgrimage, etc.) and 1,9% for professional purposes. Rented accommodation such as hotels and similar establishments, campsites, hostels, etc., constituted the main type of stay for 54,2% of the trips, while non-rented accommodation (i.e. own home, staying with relatives or friends, etc.) accounted for 45,8%.
The number of trips abroad in 2023 reached 1.674.725 compared to 1.234.615 in 2022, recording an increase of 35,6%. A percentage of 85,7% of these trips were conducted for personal purposes while 14,3% for professional purposes. A percentage of 70,0% of outbound trips had rented accommodation as their main type of stay, while 30,0% had non-rented accommodation as their main type of stay.
Expenditure for trips
Expenditure for domestic trips reached 鈧�292,9 mn in 2023, recording an increase of 9,9% compared to 2022. Expenditure on food and drinks in cafes and restaurants comprised the largest share of total expenditure for domestic trips (40,1%), while accommodation spending accounted for 35,4%. Transportation costs accounted for 10,1% of total expenditure and expenditure on other goods or services for 14,4%.
Expenditure for outbound trips amounted to 鈧�1.940,2 mn in 2023, recording an increase of 39,1% compared to 2022. Expenditure on transport comprised the largest share of total expenditure, with a percentage of 35,7%, while smaller percentages corresponded to expenditure on accommodation (24,0%), food and drinks in cafes and restaurants (23,1%) and other goods or services (17,2%).

Based on the preliminary estimates of the main aggregates of the National Accounts by institutional sector for the year 2023, the gross disposable income for the total economy amounted to 鈧�27.981,9 mn, the gross saving amounted to 鈧�3.463,0 mn and the net borrowing (-) amounted to 鈧�2.998,7 mn.

In addition, the savings ratio, which is calculated as the percentage of the gross saving to the gross disposable income of Households and NPISH, amounted to 9,9% compared to 12,1% in 2022.
The investment ratio of the non-financial corporations, which is calculated as the percentage of investments to gross value added of the non-financial corporations鈥� sector, amounted to 19,8% compared to 17,7% in 2022.

Industrial Turnover Index: August 2024
In August 2024, the Industrial Turnover Index reached 118,3 units (base 2021=100), recording an increase of 2,2% compared to August 2023. For the period January 鈥� August 2024, the index recorded an increase of 2,3% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
In manufacturing, the Industrial Turnover Index for August 2024 reached 103,5 units, recording an increase of 0,6% compared to August 2023. Increases were also recorded in the sectors of mining and quarrying (+8,0%), electricity supply (+6,3%) and water supply and materials recovery (+3,7%).

Registered unemployed: October 2024
The unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of October 2024, reached 7.781 persons. Based on the seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for October 2024 decreased to 10.208 persons in comparison to 10.265 in the previous month.
In comparison with October 2023, a decrease of 1.451 persons or 15,7% was recorded, attributed mainly to the sectors of financial and insurance activities, construction, trade, manufacturing, as well as to the decrease recorded for newcomers in the labour market.

The preliminary General Government fiscal results, which are prepared by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) indicate a deficit of 鈧�39,0 mn for the period of April-June 2024, as compared to a deficit of 鈧�260,8 mn that was recorded during the period of April-June 2023.
Revenue
During the period of April-June 2024, total revenue increased by 鈧�523,2 mn (+19,2%) and amounted to 鈧�3.252,6 mn, compared to 鈧�2.729,4 mn in the corresponding period 2023.
In detail, taxes on production and imports increased by 鈧�173,6 mn (+17,4%) and amounted to 鈧�1.172,5 mn, compared to 鈧�998,9 mn in the second quarter of 2023, of which net VAT revenue increased by 鈧�131,3 mn (+20,0%) and amounted to 鈧�789,0 mn, compared to 鈧�657,7 mn in the corresponding quarter of 2023. Social contributions increased by 鈧�131,2 mn (+13,5%) and amounted to 鈧�1.101,9 mn, compared to 鈧�970,7 mn in the second quarter of 2023. Revenue from taxes on income and wealth increased by 鈧�89,2 mn (+21,3%) and amounted to 鈧�507,1 mn, compared to 鈧�417,9 mn in the corresponding quarter of 2023. Property income receivable increased by 鈧�17,1 mn (+62,2%) and amounted to 鈧�44,6 mn, compared to 鈧�27,5 mn in the second quarter of 2023. Other current transfers increased by 鈧�61,8 mn (+75,8%) and amounted to 鈧�143,4 mn, compared to 鈧�81,6 mn in the corresponding quarter of 2023.
Expenditure
During the period of April-June 2024, total expenditure increased by 鈧�301,4 mn (+10,1%) and amounted to 鈧�3.291,6 mn, from 鈧�2.990,2 mn in the corresponding period of 2023.
Specifically, social transfers increased by 鈧�108,5 mn (+8,4%) and amounted to 鈧�1.402,4 mn, compared to 鈧�1.293,9 mn in the second quarter of 2023. Compensation of employees (including imputed social contributions and pensions of civil servants) increased by 鈧�58,0 mn (+6,9%) and amounted to 鈧�899,7mn, compared to 鈧�841,7 mn in the corresponding quarter of 2023. Other current expenditure increased by 鈧�68,3 mn (+48,0%) and amounted to 鈧�225,1 mn, compared to 鈧�142,3 mn in the second quarter of 2023. Intermediate consumption increased by 鈧�11,2 mn (+3,8%) and amounted to 鈧�310,2 mn, compared to 鈧�299,0 mn in the corresponding quarter of 2023. Property income payable increased by 鈧�48,4 mn (+38,8%) and amounted to 鈧�172,9 mn, compared to 鈧�124,5 mn in the second quarter of 2023.
The capital account increased by 鈧�22,0 mn (+9,6%) and amounted to 鈧�250,6 mn (鈧�201,5 mn capital formation and 鈧�49,1 mn capital transfers), compared to 鈧�228,6 mn (鈧�184,0 mn capital formation and 鈧�44,6 mn capital transfers) in the corresponding quarter of 2023.

Consumer Price Index (CPI): October 2024
In October 2024, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0,16 units and reached 118,64 units compared to 118,48 units in September 2024. In October 2024, the inflation increased by 0,6%.
For the period January-October 2024, the CPI increased by 1,8% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The largest change in economic categories compared to October 2023 was recorded in Petroleum Products with a percentage of -12,75%, while compared to the previous month, the largest change was recorded in Agricultural Products with a percentage of -2,17%.
Analysis of percentage changes
Compared to October 2023, the largest changes were observed in the categories of Restaurants and Hotels (5,4%), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (5,0%), and Transportation (-6,9%).
Compared to September 2024, the largest changes were observed in the categories of Clothing and Footwear (3,1%) and Education (1,1%).
For the period January 鈥� October 2024, compared to the corresponding period of last year, the largest change was recorded in the category of Restaurants and Hotels (5,7%).
Analysis of effects in units
The largest positive impact on the change of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for October 2024 compared to October 2023 came from the categories of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (1,16) and Restaurants and Hotels (0,56).
The largest negative impact on the change of the CPI for October 2024 compared to October 2023 came from the category Transport (-1,28).
The category with the largest impact on the change of the CPI compared to the previous month was Clothing and Footwear (0,22).
The largest changes in the CPI for October 2024 compared to the CPI of October 2023 were observed in the categories of Petroleum Products (-1,48), Catering Services (0,55) and Electricity (-0,49).
Clothing Items (0,14) had the largest positive impact on the change of the CPI for October 2024 compared to the index of the previous month, while the category with the largest negative impact was Fresh Vegetables (-0,26).
