Total Employment for the 2nd quarter of 2024 is estimated at 484.308 persons, of which 434.770 are employees and 49.538 are self-employed.
Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023, total employment increased by 2,1% for the 2nd quarter of 2024. The most significant percentage increases were observed in the economic activities of Education (NACE P), Administrative and Supporting Service activities (NACE 螡), Transportation and storage (NACE H), Human Health and Social Work Activities (NACE Q) and Accommodation and Food Service Activities (NACE I).

Actual hours worked for the 2nd quarter of 2024 are estimated at 223.299 thousand; an increase of 2,3% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023. Registration of Motor Vehicles: January-August 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-August 2024.
In August 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 3.527, recording an increase of 9,8% compared to 3.211 in August 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 6,8% to 2.776, from 2.599 in August 2023.
The main developments during the period January-August 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 15,9% to 34.391 in January-August 2024, from 29.673 in January-August 2023.
(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 26.902 from 23.777 in January-August 2023, recording a rise of 13,1%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 10.963 or 40,8% were new and 15.939 or 59,2% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 27,8% to 3.180.
(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-August 2024 to 50,1% (from 59,8% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 9,9% in 2024 from 10,2% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,4% in 2023 to 3,3% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 27,5% to 36,8%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-August 2024 decreased to 110, from 231 in the same period of 2023.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 38,4% to 3.858 in January-August 2024, compared to 2.788 in January-August 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 41,5% to 3.073, heavy goods vehicles by 34,2% to 463, road tractors (units of trailers) by 83,1% to 152, while rental vehicles decreased by 10,1% to 170.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-August 2024 increased to 535 compared to 206 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 9,0% to 2.532 in January-August 2024, compared to 2.324 in the same period of 2023.

Total imports of goods in July 2024 were 鈧�1.046,6 mn as compared to 鈧�1.102,3 mn in July 2023, recording a decrease of 5,1%. Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�625,4 mn and from third countries 鈧�421,1 mn, compared to 鈧�692,7 mn and 鈧�409,6 mn respectively in July 2023. Imports in July 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�11,7 mn as compared to 鈧�87,7 mn in July 2023.
Total exports of goods in July 2024 were 鈧�325,1 mn as compared to 鈧�386,4 mn in July 2023, recording a decrease of 15,9%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�100,9 mn and to third countries 鈧�224,2 mn, compared to 鈧�89,3 mn and 鈧�297,1 mn respectively in July 2023. Exports in July 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�20,0 mn as compared to 鈧�61,6 mn in July 2023.
Total imports of goods in January鈥揓uly 2024 amounted to 鈧�6.619,1 mn as compared to 鈧�7.597,2 mn in January鈥揓uly 2023, recording a decrease of 12,9%. Total exports of goods in January-July 2024 were 鈧�2.311,3 mn compared to 鈧�2.403,3 mn in January-July 2023, registering a decrease of 3,8%. The trade deficit was 鈧�4.307,8 mn in January鈥揓uly 2024 compared to 鈧�5.193,9 mn in the corresponding period of 2023.

Total imports of goods amounted to 鈧�902,1 mn in June 2024 as compared to 鈧�1.059,5 mn in June 2023, recording a decrease of 14,9%.
Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in June 2024 were 鈧�188,3 mn as compared to 鈧�160,4 mn in June 2023, recording an increase of 17,4%. Domestic exports of industrial products in June 2024 were 鈧�177,3 mn compared to 鈧�152,4 mn in June 2023, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in June 2024 were 鈧�9,7 mn compared to 鈧�6,5 mn in June 2023.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in June 2024 were 鈧�261,0 mn as compared to 鈧�160,6 mn in June 2023, recording an increase of 62,5%.

Government employment by category: August 2024
In August 2024 total government employment reached 52.452 persons. For the period January 鈥� August 2024 average total government employment reached 54.227 persons, marking an increase of 2.019 persons (3,9%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023.
In August 2024 in the Civil Service there were 12.035 permanent employees, 4.222 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.209 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.848 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,6%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5,2%).
In the Educational Service there were 11.883 permanent employees, 1.155 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 2.013 employees with contracts of definite duration and 142 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (78,2%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,9%).
In Security Forces there were 8.354 permanent employees, 4.547 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 296 employees with contracts of definite duration and 748 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (59,9%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,1%).

Sales of industrial commodities of local production by type 2022
The Statistical Service announces the publication of detailed data on the sales of commodities produced by industrial units in Cyprus in 2022, both in quantity (wherever this is possible) and in value terms.
During 2022 the total sales of industrial commodities of local production reached 鈧�4.289,6 million compared to 鈧�3.774,2 million in 2021, registering an increase of 13,7%.
The sales from local industrial units of some indicative products were in 2022: halloumi cheese 44,0 thousand tonnes with value 鈧�309,1 million, pasteurized milk and fresh cream 59,7 million litres with value 鈧�79,2 million, fresh fruit juice 59,9 thousand tonnes with value 鈧�40,6 million, prepared meat products 鈧�45,3 million, fresh bakery and pastry products 鈧�320,3 million, beer 41,7 million litres with value 鈧�48,8 million, wines 11,8 million litres with value 鈧�36,4 million, soft drinks 12,6 million litres with value 鈧�17,0 million, bottled mineral water 189,0 million litres with value 鈧�35,3 million, chemical products 鈧�80,2 million, pharmaceutical products and preparations 鈧�324,7 million, cement and clinker 鈧�140,4 million and readymixed concrete 2,9 million cubic metres with value 鈧�202,0 million.
