Industrial Turnover Index: April 2024

In April 2024, the Industrial Turnover Index reached 133,8 units (base 2021=100), recording an increase of 11,1% compared to April 2023. For the period January 鈥� April 2024, the index recorded an increase of 3,1% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In manufacturing, the Industrial Turnover Index for April 2024 reached 137,7 units, recording an increase of 13,8% compared to April 2023. Increases were also recorded in the sectors of water supply and materials recovery (+59,4%) and mining and quarrying (+39,2%). A decrease was noted in the electricity supply sector (-12,7%).

Registration of Motor Vehicles: January-June 2024

The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-June 2024.

In June 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 4.369, recording an increase of 6,7% compared to 4.094 in June 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 8,9% to 3.447, from 3.166 in June 2023.

The main developments during the period January-June 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:

(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 19,2% to 26.250 in January-June 2024, from 22.021 in January-June 2023.

(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 20.623 from 17.600 in January-June 2023, recording a rise of 17,2%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 8.791 or 42,6% were new and 11.832 or 57,4% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 27,4% to 2.296.

(c) The share of petrol powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-June 2024 to 49,5% (from 59,9% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel powered cars to 10,0% in 2024 from 10,5% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,2% in 2023 to 3,3% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 27,3% to 37,2%.

(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-June 2024 decreased to 87, from 189 in the same period of 2023.

(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 40,8% to 2.975 in January-June 2024, compared to 2.113 in January-June 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 43,5% to 2.369, heavy goods vehicles by 31,2% to 341, road tractors (units of trailers) by 88,5% to 115 and rental vehicles by 6,4% to 150.

(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-June 2024 increased to 399 compared to 112 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 3,0% to 1.800 in January-June 2024, compared to 1.747 in the same period of 2023.

Building permits: April 2024

The Statistical Service announces that the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices during April 2024 stood at 669. The total value of these permits reached 鈧�261,3 million and the total area 192,3 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 930 dwelling units.

During the period January 鈥� April 2024, 2.545 building permits were issued compared to 2.351 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 8,3%. The total value of these permits increased by 8,9% and the total area by 15,7%.

The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 24,2%. Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Results of the Survey on Industrial Production 2022

According to the results of the Survey on Industrial Production 2022, employment in the broad industrial sector increased in 2022 by 3,0% to 42,1 thousand compared to 40,9 thousand persons in 2021. In manufacturing employment reached 37,1 thousand, in mining and quarrying 0,6 thousand, in electricity supply 2,2 thousand and in water supply, sewerage and waste management also 2,2 thousand persons.

In the whole of the industrial sector, production value at current prices recorded an increase of 21,2% to 鈧�6.581,7 million in 2022 compared to 鈧�5.430,7 million in 2021. In manufacturing, production value increased by 12,7% to 鈧�4.509,7 million, in electricity supply by 52,1% to 鈧�1.437,2 million, in water supply, sewerage and waste management by 16,9% to 鈧�477,5 million and in mining and quarrying by 110,8% to 鈧�157,2 million.

Value added at current prices increased by 7,2% in the total of industry and reached 鈧�2.018,9 million in 2022 compared to 鈧�1.882,5 million in 2021. In manufacturing, value added increased by 3,7% to 鈧�1.472,5 million, in electricity supply by 25,4% to 鈧�303,0 million, in water supply, sewerage and waste management by 4,6% to 鈧�199,0 million and in mining and quarrying by 43,8% to 鈧�44,5 million.

Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�611,4 mn and from third countries 鈧�420,4 mn, compared to 鈧�594,0 mn and 鈧�406,0 mn respectively in May 2023. Imports in May 2024 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of 鈧�77,0 mn as compared to 鈧�34,6 mn in May 2023.

Total exports of goods in May 2024 were 鈧�338,4 mn as compared to 鈧�421,8 mn in May 2023, recording a decrease of 19,8%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�89,8 mn and to third countries 鈧�248,6 mn, compared to 鈧�101,3 mn and 鈧�320,5 mn respectively in May 2023. Government Employment by category: June 2024

In June 2024 total government employment reached 54.153 persons. For the period January 鈥� June 2024 average total government employment reached 54.721 persons, marking an increase of 2.524 persons (4,8%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023.

In the Civil Service there were 12.004 permanent employees, 4.243 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.265 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.856 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,4%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5,4%).

In the Educational Service there were 11.890 permanent employees, 1.193 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 3.768 employees with contracts of definite duration and 148 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (69,9%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,9%).

In Security Forces there were 8.123 permanent employees, 4.617 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 299 employees with contracts of definite duration and 747 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (58,9%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,2%).

Results of the Services and Transport Survey 2022

According to the results of the Services and Transport Survey, the tertiary sector of the economy registered in 2022 a positive growth rate compared to 2021.

In particular, production value during 2022 showed an increase of 29,3% in transportation and storage (sector H), 44,8% in accommodation and food service activities (sector I), 37,6% in information and communication (sector J), 18,2% in real estate activities (sector L), 13,0% in professional, scientific and technical activities (sector M), 23,2% in administrative and support service activities (sector N), 8,7% in education (section P), 7,9% in human health and social work activities (section Q), 40,2% in arts, entertainment and recreation (section R) and 10,5% in other service activities (section S).

Regarding the value added at current prices, increases were recorded in all sectors. 螡otable increases were recorded in accommodation and food service activities by 48,0%, reaching 鈧�1.397,1 million and in information and communication by 38,4% to 鈧�2.764,3 million. Significant increases were also observed in arts, entertainment and recreation by 44,3% to 鈧�311,1 million, administrative and support service activities by 21,4% to 鈧�617,3 million, in transportation and storage by 17,0% to 鈧�949,6 million and in education by 15,8% to 鈧�428,7 million.

In 2022, employment increased in all economic sectors. The highest employment is registered in accommodation and food service activities with 52.247 persons, followed by professional, scientific, and technical activities with 38.289 persons, information and communication with 21.024 persons, transportation and storage with 20.686 persons and administrative and support service activities with 17.942 persons.
