Building permits: March 2024
The Statistical Service announces that the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices during March 2024 stood at 583. The total value of these permits reached 鈧�260,1 million and the total area 225,7 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 1.171 dwelling units.
During the period January 鈥� March 2024, 1.876 building permits were issued compared to 1.816 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 3,3%. The total value of these permits increased by 13,2% and the total area by 12,2%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 20,7%.
Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Consumer Price Index (CPI): May 2024
In May 2024, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0,75 units and reached 117,84 units compared to 117,09 units in April 2024. In May 2024, the inflation increased by 2,7%.
For the period January-May 2024, the CPI increased by 2,0% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
As regards the economic origin, the largest positive change when compared to the index of May 2023 was recorded in Petroleum products (10,0%). In comparison to the index of the previous month, the largest change was monitored in Agricultural goods (6,3%).
Analysis of percentage changes
Compared to May 2023, the largest change was monitored in category Restaurants and Hotels (6,0%) and Transport (5,4%).
In comparison to the CPI of the previous month, the largest change was noted in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (1,8%).
For the period January鈥揗ay 2024, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the largest changes were recorded in Restaurants and Hotels (5,9%) and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (3,7%).
Analysis of effects in units
Compared to the Index of May 2023 the categories Transport (0,93) and Restaurants and Hotels (0,60) had the largest positive effect on the change of the CPI.
The largest effect on the change of the CPI compared to the previous month was recorded in in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0,42).
Petroleum products (0,91) and Catering services (0,60) had the most notable effect on the change of the CPI of May 2024 compared to May 2023.
Finally, Fresh vegetables (0,33) and Fresh fruit (0,29) had the largest effect on the change of the CPI of May 2024 compared to the previous month.

Revenue from tourism: March 2024
Based on the results of the Passengers Survey carried out by the Statistical Service, revenue from tourism reached 鈧�113,0 mn in March 2024 compared to 鈧�97,8 mn in the corresponding month of the previous year, recording an increase of 15,5%.
For the period of January 鈥� March 2024, revenue from tourism is estimated at 鈧�223,3 mn compared to 鈧�200,0 mn in the corresponding period of 2023, recording an increase of 11,7%.
Expenditure analysis
The average expenditure per person was 鈧�558,88 in March 2024 compared to 鈧�530,72 in March 2023, recording an increase of 5,3%.
Tourists from the United Kingdom (the largest tourist market with 31,8% of the total tourists in March 2024) spent on average 鈧�73,49 per day, while tourists from Poland (the second largest market during the specific month with 10,4% of the total tourists) spent on average 鈧�75,86. Tourists from Germany (the third largest market with 9,8%), spent on average 鈧�98,66 per day.

Registration of Motor Vehicles: January-May 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-May 2024.
In May 2024, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 4.292, recording a decrease of 9,6% compared to 4.747 in May 2023. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 14,5% to 3.325, from 3.888 in May 2023.
The main developments during the period January-May 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 22,1% to 21.881 in January-May 2024, from 17.927 in January-May 2023.
(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 17.176 from 14.434 in January-May 2023, recording a rise of 19,0%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 7.374 or 42,9% were new and 9.802 or 57,1% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 29,4% to 1.860.
(c) The share of petrol-powered passengers鈥� cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-May 2024 to 49,3% (from 60,8% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel-powered cars to 10,0% in 2024 from 10,6% in 2023. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 2,1% in 2023 to 3,4% in 2024 and of hybrid cars from 26,6% to 37,3%.
(d) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-May 2024 decreased to 83, from 115 in the same period of 2023.
(e) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 42,6% to 2.471 in January-May 2024, compared to 1.733 in January-May 2023. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 46,1% to 1.955, heavy goods vehicles by 35,3% to 291, road tractors (units of trailers) by 70,4% to 92 and rental vehicles by 5,6% to 133.
(f) Mopeds < 50cc registered in January-May 2024 increased to 381 compared to 61 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
(g) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 7,7% to 1.479 in January-May 2024, compared to 1.373 in the same period of 2023.

Government employment by category: May 2024
In May 2024 total government employment reached 54.826 persons. For the period January 鈥� May 2024 average total government employment reached 54.835 persons, marking an increase of 2.684 persons (5,1%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023.
In the Civil Service there were 12.032 permanent employees, 4.248 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.271 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.838 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,4%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5,4%).
In the Educational Service there were 11.889 permanent employees, 1.191 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.386 employees with contracts of definite duration and 148 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (67,5%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,8%).
In Security Forces there were 8.144 permanent employees, 4.633 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 299 employees with contracts of definite duration and 747 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (58,9%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,2%).

Extension until 31/12/2024 of the deadline for the payment of the 0,4% Central Body for Equal Burden Sharing fee, due to the transfer of immovable property and shares following sale during the period 22/02/2021 until 18/11/2022
The Tax Department informs that, following the announcements dated , , and and based on a new decision of the Commissioner of Taxation, the date of payment of the Central Body Fee for Equal Burden Sharing without the imposition of monetary charges and interest is extended until 31 of December 2024. By this date, it is estimated that the examination of all objections submitted in relation to the imposition of Central Body for Equal Burden Sharing fee will be completed.
Payments made after the above date are considered late and are subject to charges and interest until the full payment of the debts.
It is noted that those who have transferred immovable property following a sale between 22/02/2021 and 18/11/2022 and have not received the relevant debt notice, should either (a) search for the relevant debt in the Tax Portal 鈥� "Debt Statement" and proceed with payment or (b) visit the local District Offices of the Tax Department, providing all the necessary information for debt settlement.
Payments are made through the Tax Portal (internet banking based on payment reference number or credit/debit card). On the website of the Tax Department there is a which you can consult.

Monthly economic developments: January 鈥� April 2024
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the bimonthly bulletin 芦Monthly Economic Developments禄 for the period January 鈥� April 2024. The bulletin includes the most important economic developments for the Cyprus Economy, for the latest months up to April 2024, as well as comparative data for the last four years, which were available until the 11th of June 2024.
The Manufacturing sector during the period January-March 2024, recorded an increase of 4,3% compared to January-March 2023.
The total area of Building Permits Authorized reached 626,4 thousand square metres during the period January-March 2024, recording an increase of 12,2% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The total registrations of Motor Vehicles increased by 33,5%, reaching to 17.589 during the period January-April 2024. Private saloon cars increased to 12.365, recording a rise of 41,0% and light goods vehicles increased to 1.550 recording a rise of 48,5% compared to January-April 2023.
The Consumer Price Index increased by 1,8% during the period January-April 2024, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The total Imports of Goods reached 鈧�3.619,6 mn during the period January鈥揂pril 2024, recording a decrease of 18,4% and total Exports of Goods reached 鈧�1.166,6 mn, recording also a decrease of 8,4%.
The Arrivals of Tourists totaled 748.814 during the period January-April 2024, compared to 736.629 in the corresponding period of 2023, recording an increase of 1,7%.
