The submission of tax returns for 2023 has begun 鈥� What taxpayers should pay attention to
This year, the declaration of employees and self-employed persons for 2023 has been posted on time on the TAXISnet Service and is available to the public for submission.
Employees, pensioners and self-employed persons whose gross income for the year 2023 is greater than 鈧�19,500 are obliged to submit a declaration. The deadline for filing an individual's income return for tax year 2023 is 31 July 31 2024.
The Tax Commissioner, Sotiris Markides, speaking to "F", stated that any submission of a tax return after 31 July 2024 is considered a late submission of a return and is charged with a 鈧�100 fine. He also said that last year, by the deadline for filing the 2022 personal income return, 293,500 tax returns were filed.
According to the Tax Commissioner, automations continue to exist in the 2023 Individual's Income Return, such as the automatic completion of pension amounts and corresponding deductions (income tax and GHS) from the Treasury and Social Insurance Services, the automatic calculation of totals and the automatic transfer of the amounts of the Declaration to the Part Calculation of Tax, GHS and Special Contribution for Defence.
It is worth noting that last year there was a delay in posting the 2022 personal income statement due to the late passage of legislation affecting the tax system of the year.

The process of renewing registration licenses for self-catering accommodation has begun
The Deputy Ministry of Tourism announced the beginning of the process of renewing the registration license of self-catering accommodation, which is carried out only through its online platform.
In an announcement, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism states that according to the relevant legislation, the application for renewal of the license must be submitted within three (3) months, before the expiration of the valid registration license and the renewal will be valid for five (5) years. The initial registration license and registration license renewal fee is 鈧�222.
It also states that late applications for renewal purposes will not be accepted and in such a case, as it states, the applicant will have to resubmit an application for the issuance of a registration license, accompanied by all relevant documents, as provided for the initial registration license and which will be valid only for three (3) years.
Citing the "Regulation of the Establishment and Operation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation Law", the Deputy Ministry of Tourism states that "the entrepreneur/manager of each self-catering accommodation may advertise and/or rent the self-catering accommodation, provided that it is registered in the Register of Self-Catering Accommodation and has obtained a registration permit and registration number from the Deputy Ministry, which must appear in the advertisement and/or promotion of the accommodation, as well as in all relevant transactions".
In addition, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism states that according to the provisions of the relevant legislation, anyone who maintains or operates self-catering accommodation without a registration permit or whose registration permit has been revoked is guilty of an offence and, in case of conviction, is liable to imprisonment not exceeding one (1) year or a fine, which does not exceed five thousand euros (鈧�5,000) or to both of these penalties.
"If the offence continues after his conviction, he is guilty of a further offence and is liable to a further fine, which does not exceed two hundred euros (鈧�200) for each day of continuation of the infringement," it concludes.

Submission of a Solemn Declaration for the imposition of a Reduced VAT Rate on the Purchase / Construction of a House and issuance of a Reduced VAT Rate Certificate
The Tax Department informs that, as of 27 May 2024, the submission of the Solemn Declaration for a Reduced VAT Rate of 5% on the purchase / construction of a house will be submitted ONLY through the Tax For All (TFA) Taxpayer Portal, from where you will be able to receive the relevant Reduced VAT Rate certificate when the examination of your request is completed.
In order to submit the Solemn Declaration, on the TFA Portal and then you must:
- if you are a new taxpayer, through the TFA Portal
- if you already have a tax ID, to your Tax ID Number.
On the TFA website, there are regarding the submission of the Solemn Declaration and the issuance of a Reduced VAT Rate Certificate, as well as a tool for calculating VAT on the purchase/construction of a house, which you can consult.
WARNING
Solemn Declarations in printed form, can be submitted to the local District Offices ONLY until 17/05/2024, in order to enable data transfer to TFA until 27/05/2024. After this date, Solemn Declarations will be submitted ONLY through TFA and no Solemn Declaration for the imposition of a reduced VAT rate on the purchase/construction of a house and will be accepted in printed form.

Revenue from Tourism 15,0% Based on the results of the Passengers Survey carried out by the Statistical Service, revenue from tourism reached 鈧�65,1 mn in February 2024 compared to 鈧�56,6 mn in the corresponding month of the previous year, recording an increase of 15,0%.
For the period of January 鈥� February 2024, revenue from tourism is estimated at 鈧�110,3 mn compared to 鈧�102,2 mn in the corresponding period of 2023, recording an increase of 7,9%.
Expenditure analysis
The average expenditure per person was 鈧�521,01 in February 2024 compared to 鈧�475,39 in February 2023, recording an increase of 9,6%.
Tourists from the United Kingdom (the largest tourist market with 24,6% of the total tourists in February 2024) spent on average 鈧�63,37 per day, while tourists from Poland (the second largest market during the specific month with 13,3% of the total tourists) spent on average 鈧�69,87. Tourists from Israel (the third largest market with 10,6%), spent on average 鈧�113,36 per day.

In April 2024 total government employment reached 55.253 persons. For the period January 鈥� April 2024 total government employment reached 54.837 persons, marking an increase by 2.697 persons (5,2%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023.
In the Civil Service there were 12.238 permanent employees, 4.274 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.334 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.784 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51,8%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5,6%).
In the Educational Service there were 11.910 permanent employees, 1.193 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.449 employees with contracts of definite duration and 152 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (67,3%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0,9%).
In Security Forces there were 8.182 permanent employees, 4.688 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 300 employees with contracts of definite duration and 749 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (58,8%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2,2%).

Building permits: February 2024
The Statistical Service announces that the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices during February 2024 stood at 706. The total value of these permits reached 鈧�248,9 million and the total area 202,6 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 919 dwelling units.
During the period January 鈥� February 2024, 1.293 building permits were issued compared to 1.143 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 13,1%. The total value of these permits increased by 16,9% and the total area by 14,3%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 13,4%.
Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.
