Increase of social insurance fund contribution rates effective 1st January 2024
In accordance with the Cyprus Social Insurance Law of 59(I)/2010, as amended, the contribution rates to the Social Insurance Fund will increase as follows, effective 1st January 2024:
- In the case of employed persons, the contribution rates to the Social Insurance Fund by both the employer and the employee will increase from 8,3% to 8,8% on insurable earnings.
- In the case of self-employed persons, the contribution rate to the Social Insurance Fund will increase from 15,6% to 16,6% on insurable earnings.
Social insurance contributions applicable to employees effective 1st January 2024
The Department of Social Insurance Services lays down yearly the maximum amount of earnings used for the purpose of calculating the contributions to the Social Insurance, Redundancy, Training and Development Funds.
Based on an announcement issued on 29/11/2023 by the Social Insurance Services Department, the maximum amount of insurable earnings for 2024 has been revised upwards from the previous year to 鈧�1.209 per week, 鈧�5.239 per month and 鈧�62.868 per annum.
It is noted that contributions to the Social Cohesion Fund are calculated on actual earnings, not subject to the above caps.

Registration of motor vehicles: January - December 2023
The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-December 2023.
In December 2023, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 2.994, recording an increase of 35,4% compared to 2.211 in December 2022. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 45,5% to 2.468, from 1.696 in December 2022.
The main developments during the period January-December 2023 compared to the corresponding period of 2022 are summarised as follows:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 34,6% to 45.494 in January-December 2023, from 33.795 in January-December 2022.
(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 36.608 from 26.598 in January-December 2022, recording a rise of 37,6%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 14.637 or 40,0% were new and 21.971 or 60,0% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a rise of 36,0% to 5.577.
(c) Motor coaches and buses registered in 2023 increased to 329, from 85 in 2022.
(d) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 12,3% to 4.374 in January-December 2023, compared to 3.895 in January-December 2022. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 8,2% to 3.409, heavy goods vehicles by 40,9% to 534, road tractors (units of trailers) by 67,0% to 157 and rental vehicles by 1,1% to 274.
(e) Mopeds < 50cc registered in 2023 increased to 321 compared to 244 in the previous year.
(f) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased by 27,9% to 3.324 in January-December 2023, compared to 2.598 in the same period of 2022.
(g) The main manufacturers of motor vehicles registered in Cyprus during 2023 were Japan (42,9%), Germany (13,9%), France (7,2%), the United Kingdom (5,3%) and South Korea (4,9%).
(h) The grand majority (55,0%) of motor vehicles registered in 2023 were petrol powered, while 18,0% were diesel powered, 2,9% electric and 24,1% hybrid vehicles. The corresponding proportions for 2022 were 58,3%, 21,2%, 2,2% and 18,3%.

Total imports of goods in November 2023 were 鈧�1.057,6 mn as compared to 鈧�1.026,7 mn in November 2022, recording an increase of 3,0%. Imports from other EU Member States were 鈧�603,3 mn and from third countries 鈧�454,4 mn, compared to 鈧�619,4 mn and 鈧�407,3 mn respectively in November 2022. Imports in November 2023 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment, with total value of 鈧�119,5 mn as compared to 鈧�161,9 mn in November 2022.
Total exports of goods in November 2023 were 鈧�379,5 mn as compared to 鈧�347,5 mn in November 2022, recording an increase of 9,2%. Exports to other EU Member States were 鈧�88,1 mn and to third countries 鈧�291,5 mn, compared to 鈧�78,4 mn and 鈧�269,2 mn respectively in November 2022. Exports in November 2023 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment, with total value of 鈧�47,2 mn as compared to 鈧�161,3 mn in November 2022.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in October 2023 were 鈧�165,1 mn as compared to 鈧�163,6 mn in October 2022, recording an increase of 0,9%. Domestic exports of industrial products in October 2023 were 鈧�159,5 mn compared to 鈧�157,5 mn in October 2022, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in October 2023 were 鈧�4,1 mn compared to 鈧�5,0 mn in October 2022.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in October 2023 were 鈧�114,8 mn as compared to 鈧�254,4 mn in October 2022, recording a decrease of 54,9%.

According to preliminary estimate of the Statistical Service, the HPI for the third quarter of 2023 amounts to 110,65 units. Compared to the second quarter of 2023, the HPI increased by 0,4% while compared to the Index of the corresponding quarter of 2022, the Index increased by 0,6%.

Output prices index in construction: 3rd Quarter 2023
The Output Prices Index in Construction for the third quarter of 2023 reached 137,27 units (base year 2015=100,00), recording an increase of 1,7% over the second quarter of 2023. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the index increased by 6,0%.
By type of project, an increase of 1,2% was observed for buildings and of 24,3% for civil engineering projects in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022.

Index of production in construction: 3rd Quarter 2023
The Index of Production in Construction during the third quarter of 2023 reached 186,29 units (base year 2015=100,00), recording an increase of 7,9% over the third quarter of 2022.
By type of project, an increase of 9,4% was observed for buildings and a marginal decrease of 0,3% for civil engineering projects in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022.

Government employment by category: December 2023
In December 2023 total government employment increased by 860 persons (1,6%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2022 and reached 54.546 persons. Permanent staff decreased by 710 persons (-2,8%), from 25.466 to 24.756 persons. Casual staff increased by 3.166 persons (15,8%) and reached 23.146 persons compared to 19.980 persons in December 2022. This increase is mainly attributed to the increase of the Educational Service casual staff, due to the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth as from the school year 2023-2024.
A decrease is observed in all permanent personnel categories, whereas an increase is observed in all casual personnel categories. The main change is observed in casual Educational Service staff (increase of 36,0%). A decrease is observed in Hourly Paid Workers (-19,4%), which is mainly attributed to the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Organisation, which is included in the Broad Public Sector, as from January 2023.
